Laptop clock always runs slow
« on: October 16, 2008, 08:34:43 PM »
Ever since I've had this laptop, I've had to reset the time at least once a week because it starts to run slower and slower. Today I just noticed that it was running 10 minutes slow -- and I just reset it a few days ago!

What a drag! Any ideas on how to fix this?

hiya

It's the internal battery that's fading probably. You usually hear of this on desktop computers, but I'm pretty sure laptops have them as well. Pretty rare occurence in laptops really, but it's the first thing that pops to mind.

fixable? yes, costs and faffing about doing the fix? could be quite cheap to expensive depending on how much faffing about opening everything up to get to the battery is!

have a look on the manufacturers website and see if theres a diagram for which you could follow and possibly do yourself. it's unlikely though, as it's probably on the motherboard somewhere but you might get lucky.

Have a search on forums to see if this model is prone to this kind of issue and any recomendations on where/costs to fix it. The battery itself will be 2 quid/bux - the labour charge to install it will be the bulk of the cost to fix

Cheers, DtM! West London & Slough UK!

Thanks very much, DtM. That's really helpful.

To be honest, this laptop is a piece of crap and I'm having more problems than not with Vista. If this costs much to fix, I might *just* take this opportunity to invest in a new one! So, I'll do some research about the internal battery and see where that gets me.

Thanks again.

They do. Some are in little modules with a lead like this Toshiba T series

or this Dell type

While others are directly on the motherboard like this button type

Sometimes they are under a little flap and you can replace them without opening the case, but without knowing the make & model it is hard to say. It's not an expensive thing to fix.
