Car Insurance
« on: October 30, 2008, 04:05:06 PM »
Well, I need help.

I need Insurance for my new UK car, and am lost entirely.

Ive tried Clements, and a few others, but does anyone know of a good car insurance company or a list of them that insure american citizens living abroad?

Judge me if you must, but please keep the verdict to yourself...

If you are a UK resident you should be able to insure your car through a UK company.

You could start by trying a local broker, like Swinton, or one of the online services which get quotes from a variety of companies with one submission, e.g.

Thanks guys. We ended up getting insurance through Gieco and at a nice price too. Clements were a lot cheaper, but my hubby is only 20 and they only insure drivers over 21. They waited until we made the payment, then informed us of the age limit.. we got a refund of course. With him being under 21 and having a US license, we were getting crazy quotes from UK companies.

So if anyone is paying through the nose for car insurance, Clements and Gieco are the way to go. With Clements we were only $200 for the full year and that was collision and comprehension with a $250 deductible. Gieco is slightly more expensive, but still a lot cheaper in comparison to UK companies.. were saving over $1000 a year through Gieco. Both companies only insure US citizens living outside the US.

Hi there,

I'm just reading into your post and findings here and just want a little clarification :-

Am I correct in thinking you've gone with Gieco and set up a USA policy with you and your hubby insured to drive fully comprehensive a car registered in the UK with you both proving your American and living outside of the USA borders?

If so, could you tell me which :-

1. Car you have insured here? Exact make & model..
2. Your approximate UK geographical location

$200 USD for a fully comprehensive policy with a $250 Deductible (Excess as it's called in the UK) for a 20 year old and I presume you're slightly older (21-23 ?) seems a fantastic price! - what springs to mind though, is the car you've insured here is a £300 20 year old mini or something!

Cheers! DtM! West London & Slough UK!

I'd also like to hear about this.  My 30+ y.o. hubby and I just got a policy through Geico for my left-hand drive 2006 VW Beetle Convertible (which I am sure people are tired of hearing how much I love and cherish) and we're paying $800 a year.  Don't have our coverage level or deductible handy, and it is a left hand drive, but still, that's a far sight from $200.
