Place of Issue on UK Passport, normal country of residence
« on: October 11, 2008, 04:44:34 AM »
Quick question first: what do I put as my UK spouse's "normal country of residence" on the application, the US or the UK?  He spent the first 19 years of his life in the UK, but the last 3 years in the US (he has a green card).

Secondly, what do I put as the place of issue (for spousal visa) on a UK passport?  All it says is "Code of Issuing State" and under that  "GBA," but the visa application asks for a city and country.  My husband had to go to Liverpool to apply for his passport, but it doesn't say that anywhere on it.  Should I just put "GBA"?

Since I know passports have changed, here's what his looks like (not his actual passport), but it has the same template/text):

Purple is "Code of Issuing State"
Green is "Authority"

That 'GBA' is actually 'GBR' - as in Great Britain.

So you would put Great Britain and/or United Kingdom Passport Agency for place/authority of issue. Very few passports give a city for place of issue these days, so you just write whatever it says on the passport under 'Issuing State'. My UK passport has 'GBR' and 'UKPA' (UK Passport Agency) in those two sections.

Does your husband own a house in the UK or spend any significant amount of time in the UK at the moment?  If not then his normal country of residence at the moment is the UK.

There is no harm in putting Liverpool, UK on the form, though it is true that most passports these days no longer list the city, but just the authority and just putting the United Kingdom would be fine.

Also, I assume you are aware that this particular passport is expired.  Does he have a new one?  Without having a non-expired passport for your sponsor to send with your visa application you are going to run into a LOT of problems.

He hasn't been to the UK since coming to America in 2005.  No house or anything there.  Do you mean the normal country of residence would be the US, then?

And as I stated in my post, that's not his passport.  It's just one I found Googling that has the same format as his, as the newer ones are different.
