Easiest way to get a UK credit card?
« on: October 12, 2008, 11:31:51 PM »
Any suggestions on how I can get a UK credit card? I've just moved here, and would like to avoid waiting the 6-12 months I fear it will take to build up a UK credit history. I've gotten a bank account with HSBC, but they won't give me one immediately.

Many of my US accounts (Citibank, Capital One) have UK branches. Is there any way to use my credit history in the US to get a UK account?

Your US credit history will not transfer over.

If you already have a US American Express card, you can get a UK one from them, but it will be with a  lower credit limit and higher interest rate.

You will probably be able to get a credit card from your bank once you start putting money into your account regularly.

I know it's probably not the best way but getting a store card helped me out.  I got an Evans mastercard, which I never used but left open (still have). I was pretty sure I was going to be refused but they accepted me.

Its interesting that HBSC wouldn't give you one. RBS gave me one with a very high limit within in only a few months of being here.
I know a few people have been able to build credit with a monthly mobile phone bill...

Store cards do definitely help - order something from the Next or Littlewoods catalogue and then pay it off with direct debit. You'll be amazed (or perhaps horrified) how fast they'll increase your limit. That'll at least start you with a credit history....
