Do you have a US bank account? If so, you should be able to deposit checks by mail.

I have had to send all my us funds checks to be deposited in my US bank account and I still use my US Visa Check Card no problem here even though it doesn't have chip & pin.

I am not sure about Halifax, but Lloyds TSB will allow you to deposit foreign currency cheques into your current account.  For a fee, of course....

On the rare occasions we have been paid with foreign checks our UK acocunt allows us to pay them in but it costs and take a long time...about 6 weeks...to clear!

Vicky

I just received a US dollar check from the University of California (travel reimbursement from a conference I attended in July) 2 weeks ago and I paid it into my UK Natwest account with no problems at all. They charged me about £10 to do it, but since the exchange rate has changed recently, I still ended up with a bit more money than I thought I would get. They told me it could take up to 28 days to clear, but in fact it was in my account within a week or so :).

I don't know the exact figure, but there is some cut off point where it can take up to 6 weeks to clear. I used to cash US student loan checks with Lloyds and post 9/11, they took up to 6 weeks to clear.
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

I was able to deposit a US check into my HSBC current account, and there was a flat fee (5 pounds i think) and it cleared within three or four days.
