Tzatziki
« on: November 15, 2008, 10:17:13 AM »
Does anyone have a killer tzatziki recipe?  I know it's pretty simple and I could easily look a recipe up online, but I just wanted to see if anyone has one that they really love before I just chose a recipe from the Google lottery.

Also, is Sainsbury's the only store which carries tahini?  I went to Morrison's and spent a half hour, along with two of their employees looking for it to no avail.  My husband also checked at Tesco's and didn't find it there either.  Where do you get tahini from?

Thanks!

Maybe Waitrose?  I've only ever found it in Sainsburys, and in health food shops, but we don't have a Waitrose easily accessible to where I live.

Tzatziki - I just looked it up on the internet when I made it & it was fine!  Not much to it - pretty easy.  :)

You can get tahini at health food stores like Holland & Barrett.

I think the trick with tzatziki is to find a basic recipe and then adapt it to your taste - I had one not long ago that was WAY to heavy on the garlic - to the point of not being refreshing at all. I think it's one of those things that you just need to experiment with....

Thanks!  I'll start experimenting this week.  I really miss Trader Joe's tzatziki (I miss TJ's in general :().  I picked up some at Morrison's the other day and it's not so great, I figured I could make my own considering there's like 4-5 ingredients which are readily available.

As far as tahini, I looked at the H&B in town and they don't have it.  Boo.  Guess I'll just head over to Sainsbury's and pick it up there.

You can get tahini in an asian grocers. They use it to make hummus. Now I totally want one of those round things that you eat with hummus. Can't remember the name.

The only round things I eat with hummus are pita or chapati.

I found tahini at sainsbury's.  Unfortunately, my little corner of the UK doesn't have any asian grocers or health food stores within a reasonable distance.  As far as I know anyway.

Oh, that's a bummer. The round things are falafel. (Took me this long to remember!)

Lots of health food shops sell tahini.

Tzatziki - I grate about 1/4 of a cucumber on the large holes of the grater, put it in a sieve with some salt for about an hour to drain the water, and stir it into a cereal bowl of yogurt with at least one crushed garlic clove (more if you like it strong!).
