moving boxes back to U.S.
« on: November 25, 2008, 01:45:54 PM »
Hi everyone. I'm moving back to the U.S. in a few months. After four years in London I have a hideous amount of stuff I can either sell or ship. I prefer to ship. Any tips on a good second class way to go? I don't have much money saved up so I need to do as much labor as I can myself, taking the boxes by hand to the post office etcetera. Has anyone done anything like this and how much did it cost? I will probably need to send about three boxes of clothes and three of books and papers, all to New York.

I'm sorry I just noticed this post.

There is a company called Yamato (Logo is a black cat carrying another black cat) they ship things at a relatively cheap rate.
I used this because I am lazy and they came and packed it for me.
They are a Japanese company but I think (and I could be wrong) they have English speaking staff.

My rate from about 3 months ago were:
25kg weight limit per box
Boat:
First Box was £60 pounds and all additional boxes were £45
Air:
First Box was £90 pounds and all additional boxes were £75
This might be cheaper since you are in New York.

Hope that helps!

Please don't use the "L" word as it may offend the likes of people like me.

Say it nice like, "lack the motivation" ;D ;D ;D

Sakura, I don't think they ship from the UK to US. If you can find a link that shows they do, I'd be interested.

Right now, we are going with Upakweship. As the name implies, you pack it, but they come and collect it and ship it off for you. For 100 cu ft, expect to pay about 700 quid to the US.
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

Try Excess Baggage.  I used them to send 7 small boxes back to the USA in April when I moved back.  After a lot of research, they seemed to have the best price.  My things arrived in excellent condition but it did take nearly 8 weeks to see them again.

Good luck!

Not sure if they do it in the reverse direction, but I just used these people to send my stuff TO the UK.

It was only 6 boxes, expensive. No matter how you slice it.

This place did a great job for me and it arrived in about a week.

They do because I used them to move to the UK and I use them to mail things back to the States.  They don't have too many things on a homepage but they do mail things worldwide.
They do have a form on the page where you tell them what you want and they mail you back a quotation.  If you are in London, I suggest you go to the Mitsukoshi branch because they will walk you through it step by step for those who are package-challenged like me.  Also if you need boxes, they will give you boxes and packing bubble thingies to take home.
If you want to know for sure, I would call them up and ask.
I just checked their ad in this Thursday's JP newspaper and the rates of what I wrote in the post above still applies.  I think if you are only goign to mail one box, i woudl not bother with Yamato but if you are mailing more than 5 boxes, I would definitely consider them.

I will note though if you live in a State where there isn't a branch , it might cost you more because they will have to drive out further to get to you.  And since I am really L......acking motivation ;D ;D ;D they even unpacked for me.  No I'm not kidding, they unpacked for me too.  (Do I win the award for ultimate L...acking motivation?)

I will note if you are doing it around the holidays, it will take more time for things to get there with everyone else sending packages too.
