insurance after uk license
« on: December 10, 2008, 09:29:47 AM »
So I called directline after passing.  My premium won't change, understandable as it's got less than 2 months left on the policy.  Does anyone know if they no claims from the state will transfer to the next insurance company once I switch?  I currently have 2 year from the states and 1 from uk.  I'm going from 600 to 260 for the premium.

It's up to the company concerned.  They are not obliged to accept your Stateside no claims record, but might do so if you ask about it.   Time to call, cajole, suggest that if they don't recognize it you might be taking your custom elsewhere, etc.

Well my current policy says 2 years no claims but it's actually 2 years from the states but of course it doesn't say that on the policy.  Once my policy renews it will be 3 years (1 for uk).  Just wondering if other insurance companies will care.

Ah, O.K.   In that case any insurer to which you transfer will almost certainly not care or even know (I wouldn't even mention that part of the discount was earned in the U.S.).

They'll ask how many years no claims you have, you'll say 3, then if/when you go ahead with the policy they will just verify that figure with your current insurer.   Once one U.K. insurer has granted you so many years no-claim discount, the others will just accept it.

Awesome!  I wonder if Halifax is any good, they were the cheapest but doesn't cover you if you drive other cars.

Halifax is just the broker.  If you need the "car not belonging to you" clause, they might be able to go to a different insurer.
