Nigella Express - Breakfast Milkshake
« on: December 26, 2008, 09:26:25 AM »
I'd like to try this, it looks lovely.  It asks to use Camp coffee.  Having looked up Camp Coffee i can't say I want to use it anytime soon.  Does anyone who has made it before know if I could just use a spoonful of Nescafe instead?

Thanks

Can you post the recipe here? Or a link to it, at least? Camp Coffee is sweet, so I'm guessing that if you're only going to use Nescafe, you'd need to add something sweet -sugar or honey or something.

why not?
it's very nice, and is used a lot in cooking... making coffee-flavoured things like cakes, ice creams, etc.

The recipe is:

1 banana
150ml milk
1 tbsp honey
4 tsp Ovaltine
1 tsp Camp coffee or 1/2 tsp instant expresso

Personally, on this Boxing Day morning, I'd use Kahula.  :)

Kahlua sounds perfect!!  ;D

But, to the OP, that sounds plenty sweet already, so Nescafe would probably work fine. If it's not sweet enough for you, you can always taste it and add more honey if you think it needs it.

That's what I was thinking with the honey.  And the actual recipe calls for an overripe banana, so that's pretty much 100% sugar.

Best part of the recipe is that the banana is frozen, so u dont water it down with ice.  and you can sub peanut butter for the coffee...mmm

If instant espresso is OK, Nescafe should be, too. It'll just be a bit weaker. I think the main point is to not water it down with regular coffee.

This Boxing Day, especially in the morning, the last thing I could face was more booze! ;D

In the end I made it...couldn't find any Camp Coffee @ Sainsbury's and I didn't think to look for instant espresso.  I used a spoonful of Cafe Noir.  It came out pretty good.  I'd say, though, that the fact that you have 4 pieces of an overripe banana makes it a very banana-heavy smoothie.  It's good if you really like banana.  I think next time I may just go for 3 or 2 pieces.

I wouldn't use Nescafe...it has a totally different flavour, and I don't think would be rich enough.
