BISQUIK AT SAINSBURY'S!

I spotted Bisquik in the bread section of Sainsbury's in York's city center.

YAY!  I WANT SOME BISCUITS, DAMMIT!

If you want some biscuits why would you need Bisquick? The best southern biscuits are made with White Lily self-rising flour, which I can't find here but I have finally discovered the perfect substitute. Try this:

 2 cups McDougal's self-raising supreme sponge flour
scant teaspoon of salt
3 tablespoons chilled butter, cubed
3 tablespoons chilled lard, cubed
3/4 cup buttermilk or plain milk

Preheat oven to highest setting.

Combine flour and salt, cut in fats with a fork until the size of peas. Stir in the milk to make a dough. DO NOT overwork. Turn onto floured board and gently pat out to about 1/2 inch thickness (thicker if you like). Use a round cutter to stamp out the biscuits, do not twist or they will rise wonky. Brush tops with milk or melted butter. Bake in hot oven until done--keep a close eye--about 8 minutes. Tops should be golden and bottoms light gold and crisp. Serve at once.

And here is a recipe for Make-your-own-Bisquick, for anyone that wants it:



8 cups flour
1-1/4 cup pwdered milk (non-fat if you can find it)
1/4 cup baking powder
1 Tbsp. salt
2 cups solid vegetable shortening


In a large bowl, combine flour, milk, baking powder, and salt. With a pastry blender or two knives, cut in shortening until the mixture looks like coarse cornmeal and the shortening is evenly distributed. Store in tightly closed covered container in a dark, cool place. Use in place of 'Bisquick' in any recipe.

Ah but theres just something about pancakes and waffles made with genuine bisquick! What isle / section was this miracle found in (sainsb's and tesco)????

I don't usually see Bisquick in the regular Tescos around here unless it's near Pancake Day. I stocked up then!
