Are brothels legal in the UK?
« on: June 20, 2004, 09:44:14 PM »
I thought that I saw an article on BBC about one brothel and the way the article sounded, it seemed legal.  But that can't be, can it?

 :)

Er, started to google this and um, you can guess the rest.  But anyway, prostitution is legal in the UK, but there are restrictions-such as soliciting on the street and something about the residence.  I can't remember the details.  Sorry.

Thanks, Mindy!  That makes more sense.  I also found this:

Quote
An estimated 250,000 work in the sex industry in Britain.

She said Britain's laws on prostitution were not clear cut - selling sex was legal but soliciting for trade was illegal.

That is from an article on a possible union for sex workers (a very good idea, imo!)

Well this is quite different from most states in the U.S.  Nevada is the only state that I know of with most counties legalizing prostitution.

soliciting and living off the earnings of prostitution is illegal here; brothels are not legal as such but in some areas they have been trialling various schemes to make it safer for prostitutes, maybe that is what the article was about?
