Pesky fire alarm!
« on: December 06, 2008, 02:17:56 AM »
Our living room fire alarm (mains powered with battery) keeps going off since DH painted the living room last week.

Any idea why?  Its annoying when it goes off at 2am and I cannot get back to sleep!

When we burn toast and have smoke ours will go off so we get some newspaper and fan the alarm until it goes off in about a minute or less.

It doesn't sound to me that it is the battery running low that would be a beep sound.

As the Tucson, Arizona Fire Dept says, air out that room!

"Why do I get false alarms? A smoke detector false alarm can be initiated by small dirt particles, smoke from cooking, placement to close to flourescent lighting fixtures, and dust or temperature extremes. These may be present in garages, kitchens and attics. Fresh paint fumes can get heavy enough to cause a false alarm, so air out freshly painted rooms. Steam from bathrooms can also cause a false alarm."

Yep, the fumes from the paint can be sufficient to trigger the alarm, and the gases can linger for a surprisingly long time.   I know it's not quite the weather for it, but leaving the windows and doors open to give the place a good airing is about all you can do -- Unless you want to disable that particular alarm for now.

Ours is outside the bathroom and beeps constantly when we take showers.  Annoying.  I feel your pain.   >:(

ditto! I keep having to jump out of the shower naked and wet...run accross the landing..( i can assure you there is nothing sexual about this ) whilst swearing to turn the damn thing off.
