Student Loan Panic!
« on: January 10, 2009, 09:58:31 PM »
I really need some advice! I'm in my last year of uni in Glasgow but can't get a loan! Previously Sallie Mae serviced my Tuition Answer loan but they are not offering them anymore. I've spent 6 hours today looking online for private loans but most companies seem to be out of buisness cuz of the credit crunch. Unfortuently, I'm not eligable for federal ones. My course in Glasgow is validated by the Univ. of Aberdeen...the college is checking to see if money can be sent to Aberdeen and then transferred to my college. Confusing, I know.

What would you do? The financial aid person is looking into this but I'm totally panicking...does anyone here have a private loan for the UK? Where did you get it from?

Or...any advice is welcome! Thanks!

Why aren't you eligible for federal loans?  All Americans are eligible for Stafford loans until they max out their loans (and that's pretty hard to do for anyone seriously attending uni).  I'm at Glasgow Uni and the Stafford loan covers me here....and I know it also works at Aberdeen Uni (I applied there as well).  Also, since it's pretty early still, have you looked to see which bursaries are available for you at your uni?

Hey! I thought I'm not eligable because apparently my college (ICC) is independant and currently isn't able to accept stafford loans. The degree itself is validated by the Univ. of Aberdeen and as such, I am a registered student and have an Aberdeen student card, but the college isn't actually a part of UofA if that makes sense...I've asked them to see if it is possible to get a loan for UofA and then transfer the money to the college...but haven't heard anything yet! I've looked into bursaries but there aren't any left, I was told I should have mentioned it 3 years ago when I applied, I didn't even think of that then lol. I wonder if the college can look into the stafford thing though - thanks for mentioning that, I'll investigate a bit more :)
