Milestone Birthday - HELP!
« on: January 17, 2009, 12:24:29 PM »
Family friend is turning 60 next week..

This woman has everything!! And I am racking my brains to get her something nicer than smellies etc..so that she has a keepsake.  She is quite a trendy lady..not a old fuddy duddy.

Ideas anyone?

Any help much appreciated!

Well, I'd say bake her something, but that's my answer to everything.  ;)
Could you throw her a party, then take pictures during said party and put them in a photo album for her?
If we called them Sad Meals, no one would buy them.

I have bought today some banners and balloons and general happy 60th party stuff and bought a large cake because I have organised a party for her with friends and family.  I like the photo album idea.  I just want her to have nice a keepsake.  :)

I find that most older people do tend to have everything, but they always seem to like photos and albums, because they don't take up much space, are personalized, and are good conversation points.
If we called them Sad Meals, no one would buy them.

What about a voucher for a slap up lunch in the Ritz or some posh hotel where she wouldn't usually think of taking herself?

My mum is nearly 60, and she'd go nuts if I got her any sort of 'old lady' stuff.  It's really hard to buy her presents.

I think I might incororate all of these things  :)  I might take her to a nice Italian.  I would love to take her to something completely different to give her a new experience such as Sushi! but there is not a decent one that I know of near me unfortunatly  :(

Digital picture frame?  Engraved flask? Funky clock that sets atomic time?

I bought an old Polaroid camera and some film and took photos during a friend's 30th birthday bash.  I taped them into a funky handmade album, and had everyone at the party write her a special message below their pics and she was able to take it with her when she left the party.  She still says it was the best gift ever.  Not that I am bragging or anything!   :P  But, yeah, I still think it was pretty clever.

Yeah, that's pretty neat. You can kind of do something like that with the digital frame, because you can get a cheap memory card and put it in the back of it with pictures from the party and she can take it home with her that day.   But you don't get the handwritten messages.

True. I just thought the Polaroid pics would look so cool and vintage years down the road when they don't exist anymore (they barely exist now, and it cost a small fortune to get the film for my little project 2 years ago). I thought it gave it a dated quality. But since this lady is pretty hip, I think the digital frame is the way to go!

Polaroids are definitely a dying artform!
Though polaroid has got a new digital camera out shortly that will directly print the pictures without a seperate printer and give them that sort of yellowy-grainy feel...

For my  aunt's 85th, DS took an old family photo including her as a baby and photo shopped a new enlargement of just her alone.  Tricky as her feet didn't show in the original!  Then we put it in a nice frame.
For my 66th I would like DS to be on his way to losing weight, eating more fruit and vegs. and getting more exercise.
