Insane Baby
« on: June 22, 2004, 11:28:24 AM »
Insane ramblings of a new mother...

I'm chalking this up to a 3 month growth spurt.

Philip says "Mommy I'm hungry." *insert blood-curdling screams here*
Mommy says "Ok, lets eat then."
Philip eats. In a difficult manner. Several ounces too, he doesn't just want to suck.
Philip says "Phew, that was fantastic, I'm done now."
Mommy says "Are you suuuuure? Here, c'mon, try some more. I know you're still hungry."
Philip says "Aw mom, quit it! I don't want more! Let me purse my lips together to prove it."
Mommy says "Fine. Off you go. Have a little play."
15 minutes later Philip says "Mommy I'm hungry." *insert blood-curdling screams here*
Mommy says "Argh! I knew you were hungry, why didn't you eat more 15 minutes ago? I tried, I really did!"
Philip says "Because it's my job to be weird."

So he wants to eat all the time. It's worse in the evenings (especially because his colic isn't entirely cleared up yet, it comes in waves and the last few days have seen many a remote control flying across the room), like last night he ate at 4, 6, 7, 7:30, 8:30, 9:30. All with the above dialogue.

But then he slept for 10.5 hours straight! I swear to God. 10:00pm to 8:30am. SOLIDLY.

I had a long talk with him yesterday and asked if he was bipolar. He said "No, I'm still colicky, and plus Im growing like mad so I want to eat all the time - hope you don't mind!"

Is there a hair-pulling-out smiley here?
He doesn't want Hungry Baby formula, it binds him up. He wanted a larger teat, that helped, but not enough to give me sanity. He just gets crazy hungry in the evening, his little belly isn't big enough to fit gigantic feeds that he wants so it's lots of smaller ones. All this with his colic and well - there's a lot of screaming followed (sometimes within seconds) by happy smiling faces.

And my MIL is no help because the first thing she asks is "Is he sleeping through the night?"
Well, yes he is - but the evenings are so bloody hard that the 7 or so hours of sleep I might get feel like 3. So. Tired. Like, as long as he's sleeping through the night it doesn't matter what kind of a terror my evenings are. :/ She's taking his away from me Friday night which I'm SO looking forward to.

He was fine for a few weeks and now it's back to weird insane baby. I'm really good at knowing what he wants (he's really good about telling me, honestly)... and he HAS to be going through a growth spurt because he's only been in this size nappy for 2 weeks and he already needs a new size.

This point has no, um, point.
Just blabbing. Thanks for the listen. :)

Could it be early teething? We had babies that reacted like that at work when their gums were hurting.... just a thought... it is usually in conjunction with drool though....

Lots of hugs! I hope some of the ladies can help!

Yep - we definitely think it's that as well. My husband teethed at 4 months and apparently it's genetic. I didn't teeth until about 7. I hope he's early, just because then it explains some of it.  :-\\\\

Oh, honey, I feel for you on this one. My 15 month old was an eating machine!

As stated before, he could be teething already. My son began cutting teeth at 3 months old. He already has his molars. He cut all four of them over the Easter Holiday.

If he gets to be too much, you may want to see if you can take a small break, and let Dad sort him out. It's a lot of hard work being a new Mommy.

*Hugs*

My mother in law took him last friday night so hubby & I could hide for a while, and she's taking him this Friday as well, though this time we're just staying home and watching one uninteruppted movie! She's quite good with dealing with a fussy boy, and the more she takes him when he's "difficult" - the more sympathy I get from her. ;)

Good news though - that I forgot to mention - he FINALLY figured out how to suck his thumb on his own! Whee!!!

Woohoo!  Isn't it great?  It should help him to be able to comfort himself and bring some blessed relief to you.

We were so pleased  when he finally did it, that we actually shot video of it. :D I think that's part of why he slept so long last night - let's pray for another night!!!

Oh poor little baby.  Sounds like he might be a gassy thing.  I know people will yell at me, but you could always try Gripe water.  Makes them burp like Longshoremen.
My oldest was a hungry baby too and blessed was the day-at about four months-that we started her on rice cereal.  Fills their little tums right up.

I would never yell at anyone giving a baby gripe water. If they are gassy, they need to get the air out. Alexander was the king of gas for the longest time, and there were times he would simply not burp. Infacol worked well for him.  :) He had competetion level belching after that, but you know, there is nothing sweeter than that sound coming from a gassy baby. ;)

Philip used to have a real problem bringing up gas, but he doesn't anymore - his belches are shockingly adult-like at times! That's only happened in the last 2 weeks or so though, his guts seem to be maturing well, I just wish they would finish.  :\\\'(

Did somebody say *growth spurt*? Christ Almighty!

He's gaine 2 pounds in 2 weeks, and is now just shy of 14 pounds. Now THAT'S a freaking growth spurt! We were well impressed.

The health visitor made a really good point as well. Even though Philip is properly sleeping through the night now, he still needs the same amount of food each day though, and sicne he's cut out his night feeds he has to make up for it during the day, and it will take him a while to get used to that.

She said put him *back* on the hungry baby formula, but give him more water between feeds to make sure he doesn't get constipated.

It is SO nice for someone to look at my baby and say "yep - just fine, it's normal, you're normal for being insane, it will get better."
