Immigrate after retirement?
« on: September 23, 2008, 11:52:02 AM »
My husband is being offered "early retirement" in lieu of a redundancy package eventhough is he a few years from retirement age.

Will this be a problem when we go to immigrate back to America (which could be as early as next year)?

It will be a nice sum of money so it will put us in good stead financially but I didn't know if there would be other problems.

Many thanks in advance.

To get some advice you may need to clarify some things.
It appears you are now in the UK?
Are you sure you are immigrating or emigrating to the US?
Are you a citizen of which country?

This was a general question.

Since this is the UK yankee board, one of us is American.

One of us will be going back and the other immigrating or emigrating (never can tell which one of those words to use).

And again, one of us is a citizen of the US and we are obviously in the UK since I said we would eventually go back to the US.

So does that help?

Your husband or you will be "em"igrating to the US.

Seems like getting a visa shouldn't be an issue since he is married to a US citizen but don't take my word for it.

There many members on this list who are better qualified to advise you than I am.

Good Luck.

Many friends contemplate this but then discover they can't afford health insurance & don't qualify for medicare either...have you thought this point through yet?

"I for In" for Immigration, and "E for Exit" for Emigration :)
09/29/09--Visa Approved!
10/05/09--Leave for the UK!!!
06/15/12--Back in the US indefinitely...

You have to meet financial requirements to qualify for a visa. You can find more info on diveintoamerica.com or visajourney.com. As long as you meet the financial requirements the fact that he is retired does not matter.

Here's an easy way to remember it. He'll be Immigrating (IN) to the US and Emmigrating (Exit) from the UK.
