Questions about Dual Nationality for the UK & USA
« on: February 10, 2010, 03:50:53 PM »
Hello,

I qualify for dual nationality.  I have been on the phone with both England and US government agencies regarding this (they are not very helpful).  Anyways I am submitting my request for a British passport this week.  I was wondering for those who have dual nationality - how long did it take to get your British passport (did it really take 6 weeks like they say), did you have to go to Washington for an interview?  Also does this mean I am automatically a British citizen or do I need to apply for that separetly? I looked on the websites and get confused.

My plan is to get my British passport and then move to the UK to be with my bf.

Hoping to get help explaining the whole dual nationality thing!  Getting nervous!
Thanks!

How do you "qualify for dual nationality?"  Is it through descent?

Yes through descent.  My dad is English and he actually is still a British citizen tho lives overseas.

It depends on when you apply. I applied for my passport in August 2009 and got my passport back in 2 business days. They said it was a quiet time, though, since tourist season was over.

If you can send your application in soon, though, it's probably early enough that turnaround should be fairly quick as tourist season hasn't started up yet.

Hope that helps!

If you can get a British passport then you are a British Citizen (you area able to prove British nationality).  If you're applying for your first passport there are special rules about the proof that you need to submit (for instance you'll need the longform birth certificate of your father and the marriage certificate of your mother and father and your longform birth certificate printed within 3 mths of your birth or supplemented with other proof that you are the natural born child of your father and mother during marriage - like hospital bills etc.)- but other than that you shouldn't have anything else to prove.

Take a good luck at the notes to the C1 form before applying as many of us have gotten our applications returned because of small oversights.http://ukinusa.fco.gov.uk/en/passports/passport-forms

Good Luck!
