Suggestions for a family summer holiday
« on: February 08, 2009, 11:37:19 PM »
This summer will be our first in Scotland and we would like to go on a package holiday somewhere warm in Europe in late July or early August.  We want a nice 4 star hotel, with a kids club, fairly close (walking distance) to shops and restaurants but not where there will be loads of drunken yobs.  We like it close enough to visit some historical sites or ruins (within a few hours drive or bus ride).

Some places we were thinking about are Crete, Cyprus, Corfu or the Costa del Sol in Spain.  There seem to be some nice hotels in Crete but they are so far from a town or city.  I'd like to visit Granada if we went to Costa del Sol.

Any suggestions of areas, specific hotels that anyone like?  Also if there are areas you have been to that you didn't like that would be helpful too.  Thanks.

Crete is a good for families...but I would avoid Malia at night.  Its ok in the day but at night time there is a large nightlife around there. The harbour is good for restaurants.

Avoid Cavos if your considering Corfu.  Its full of 18/30s holiday makers.

We went to Cyprus last October.  It was lovely, not too many drunken people in Paphos.

There were a lot of restaurants and the mosaics are right in town, but if you want to go anywhere else on the island you really, really need to rent a car.

I rented a car from a local place for 3 days for 99 euros.  It was an automatic and the drive on the British side of the road.  Some of roads were really just dirt tracks though and the mountains were pretty dicey.

How old are your children?  If you are willing to drive instead of fly the proximity to shops and restaurants is less important.  If we do a summer holiday in Europe we perfer to be in the mountains.  There is so much to do for the whole family, the views are beautiful, it's not usually very crowded and if Europe does have a hot summer that fresh mountain air is just wonderful.
We have been to the Salzburg region of Austria where we visited the salt mines, an ice cave, went up to the glacier, did loads of things actually.  We have also been to Chamonix in France, again spectacular, lots to do for the whole family and this summer we are going to Innsbruck.  We always stop overnight on and visit an nice town or city as well.

Our daughter is 6, so we'd prefer to just be at the beach somewhere.  Somewhere hot and tropical (especially since will be living in Scotland)

We will also have just traveled from the US, so probably wouldn't want to spend a lot of time driving around.  But it sounds lovely and maybe after living there a while we will spend a few weeks driving around Europe.
