Ljubljana, Slovenia vs Utrecht, Netherlands
« on: January 14, 2009, 05:47:26 PM »
I am looking to get my Masters in a program in the UK that has the first semester in another country (it is for International Applied Communications).  Just recently Slovenia has agreed to allow this type of program and now I have a decision to make on which country to go with.  I have never been to either so I thought I would ask if anyone in here has an opinion on what they like or don't like about each country and/or city.  Thanks!

I haven't been to either. But a good friend of mine is Slovenian and lives in Ljubjana and from what I understand, it is a fabulous city. What program are you doing? That might affect my decision....
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

I'd vote for Slovenia as well...it's where Slavoj Zizek is based.

I've only been to Slovenia, but I loved it and you can get to so many great places.

But I suppose the same would be true for the Netherlands.

Utrecht is more cosmopolitan, with more English speakers.

I didn't have a problem with being understood, but I speak German.  Everyone seems to understand one or the other.

Yeah, the Slovenians are like the Scandinavians, they seem to know about 10 languages each IME!

I did a day-trip to Utrecht when visiting a friend in Rotterdam last year. It was a nice place, not too big, some areas were very pretty.  It's very easy to go to Amsterdam and other cities, the rail network is comprehensive and pretty efficient.  Have never been to Slovenia, so I can't help there.  Good luck deciding.
