Spousal Visa question pertaining to Part 5
« on: March 11, 2009, 02:59:41 AM »
I'm looking through the pdf file of the spousal visa from the UKBA. I'm not filling anything out yet, but I have a real quick question. It feels like I'm asking a lot of dumb ones, but I don't want to check the wrong thing and make a dumb mistake :(

On Question 5.2, it asks you to check a box indicating your employment status (i.e. full time, part time, unemployed, self employed, etc.). At the moment I'm unemployed--the agency I was working for last year has me on their books as looking for work, but they're very short of it at the moment. I don't really see it changing much anytime soon, our work was reliant on work that companies contract out to our agency, and it's been few and far between.

I'm lucky enough to have a mom that is helping me out though. She pays the bills (they're in her name anyway) and I just help out around the house. I've always lived with her (I'm only 23, not young, but not too old either), and when I'm working I help out with the bills but right now I'm not.

This is the question: assuming I'm still unemployed when I file my application, which box do I check? There's unemployed, and then a box for being supported by a spouse/partner/family member, and I'm not sure which I fall into. I don't get any money from my mom (i.e. she doesn't give me a check or cash), she just pays the bills herself, but I am staying here with her. I think I would just check unemployed since she's not technically giving me money to support myself with, but I wanted to double check with people who have filled this stuff out before. It's a dumb question, but I'm not sure, and I wanted to check so I'm not having to figure this stuff out at the last minute :(

If nothing changes, I think you should check unemployed.  Better to be honest than not.  Do you have savings?  That would help quite a bit.  You also might want to consider including a CV to showcase your employability.  Good luck! :)

Thanks, I was leaning towards unemployed, I was just unclear kinda, no problem with checking that box :) I do have some savings (tax money came in, and it's staying where it's at), and my fiance's (soon to be husband's) finances are sorted and budgeted and all that loveliness. I'll get my CV sorted, I got all my original paperwork from when I went to school just in case. I just didn't want to check unemployed if they considered me as something else, I'm terrified of not understanding something and getting in trouble :P

I'm am doing some the same thing today. Just getting my application ready. Getting the paperwork organized etc. I am scared of making some silly little mistake myself, but with all this information and so forth; i think that the document check vicky's company offers looks like a good idea. Hoping to sort that out. I am trying to conserve pennies just like everyone else, but it is so scary when you think about getting all the information right.

that said, I do believe the ECO's will ring if they have a question about something and would understand something like that being a bit ambiguous. (Is that right? It's just kind of what i've understood from reading other posts, but i'm brand new here. and trying to sort out the spousal visa as you are.)

when are you actually sending in your application? I still have to get married, LOL. doing that at the end of the month. seems a bit mental to be working on this so soon doesn't it? So mine will be going in on the 31st to the courier. If you want to keep in touch bout how things are going that would be brilliant.

Lots of luck and all the best!

I've been in your boat, or very similar, and I just wanted to say (and I know how impossible this sounds :)) to try not to stress too much about it. My husband and I have made some [minor] mistakes on our applications and we've always made it through okay. That's not to say you shouldn't prepare and whatnot, just to try not to be too scared. You're getting married! You should have butterflies about that, not about visas. :D

Good luck!

I'm looking through the pdf file of the spousal visa from the UKBA.

While preparing to make your application, this isn't a bad way to do so, but just bear in mind you will actually be completing the online form which will be quite a bit of a different process (as far as I remember), so you might want to create a dummy application at visa4uk to "practice" rather than using the pdf. You can make up any email address you want with your dummy app, but keep your real one for the real application.

That's an idea :) I was just browsing through the pdf file and saw that question and scratched my head a bit hehe. My fiance said he'll take a look through it too in case he has any moments like that as well. I just wasn't sure what their definition of 'support' was; I figured it was actually receiving money from someone to pay your bills, but I wanted to make doubly sure--didn't want them to think I was trying to lie :(

Ninja edit: it's good to see I'm not the only one who finds questions that make them go 'huh?' :P I'll be getting married at the end of May, so I'll prolly be filling it out around then, by then I'll have all my paperwork together and my fiance can help me with it. I'm sure I'll end up asking more questions in the meantime lol.
