Filing Taxes From Overseas For the First Time.....
« on: February 17, 2009, 07:13:41 PM »
I know everyone seems to be posting their own threads, but I can't seem to make sense of all the information on here, so I really do have to get specific information for myself.

I married a British citizen in January of 2008 and moved to the UK in March of 2008.  I didn't work in the US in 2008 but have been working in England since June of 2008.  I was going to file ''married, filing seperately'', but I'm not even sure which is the best way to do it.  I'm only filing that way because my husband is British and has never worked in the US.  I suppose to file ''married, seperate'' is fine.  Yes?

Also, I've been told that all I need to do is fill out a 1040 and a 2555 or 2555EZ.  My converted income (from pounds to dollars) won't be more than the exclusion amount ($87,600).  Is this all I need to do?

I really am confused.  I always did e-file before (or tele-file, when they had it years ago), and my taxes were always very cut and dry, so this scares me to death.  I don't want to do anything wrong.  I tried calling the IRS and speaking to a specialist, but she spoke so over my head, I had to take headache medicine after getting off the phone.   ???

You are right that this is what most folk file.

You need to report worldwide income and - if appropriate file Schedule B and TD F 90-22.1.

What is the best way to file this? Is there an online way?

I did taxes last year but I worked in the US and in the UK but I think I only filed a 1040.  I don't like filing taxes so confusing.
