it's really happening!
« on: February 18, 2009, 03:46:18 PM »
i just had to send an email to my department chair letting her know that i won't be able to take on a class for this fall so that she doesn't put me in the schedule she makes up next week.  i still have my full-time job that i'm holding on to until i actually move but giving up the part-time job just now has suddenly made this feel very REAL (and scary). in some ways, i feel like i'm giving up a lot professionally to come over, and sending that email really brought the issue home.  though, i should add, i just received a reply from my department chair as i was writing this and she has confirmed that it will be possible for me to still teach an online course with them every now and then (beginning this summer!) which could be a small lifesaver while i'm over there looking for jobs!  very, very relieved to know i potentially have some small semblance of an income still coming in when i move.

for those of you who have moved already, what was the hardest part about making the move?

I have the same fears and had the same realization recently - I am giving up more than just family and friends, but quite possibly, my career too.  I doubt I will be able to find a job that pays as well as the one I have now or one at the same level as I am now.  I've worked hard to "move up the ladder" and am fairly certain I will be placed at the bottom of it once again in a new country.  Oi, the things we do for love...

hardest part has been getting myself established with a job, but I moved over right after finishing my undergrad so I didn't leave an established career to move here.  Honestly, if we could just get career stuff sorted life would be golden but the crappy economy is not making that easy!
