Tax return mail packet & ITIN wait times
« on: February 22, 2009, 11:26:36 AM »
Hi all,

Last year I filed my taxes electronically through H&R Block since my tax status was still single.

This year I am married to a NRA and will need to file for an ITIN.

First things first. Three days after filing last year I received a huge paper packet of all necessary filing forms from the IRS in the post. It was quite handy and straight forward so I plan on using these this year. Has anyone received their packet in the post, and or know if/when these will be mailed again to US citizens abroad?

Secondly, while this is speculation, what is the approximate wait time on an ITIN if filed through London? My wife's Germany ID card is already with the HO with my passport for an EEA2 Permit (6 months so far!). I don't want to send her passport away now if that too is going to be gone for so long. But will file a Tax Extension is necessary.

cheers!

1.  I received my packet of forms from the IRS last Thursday.
2.  It was a 2 week turnaround for my husband's ITIN to be processed.

You only need an ITIN for your spouse if you file jointly or if you claim her as an exemption.

Otherwise, you can claim married filing separately and just write NRA in the box where it asks for her ITIN or SS number.

I received the big packet this year and last year.

I received my packet a couple of weeks ago.

As my husband has never lived or earned in the US, I have never applied for an ITIN, and file as sweetpeach does.

Don't forget you get an automatic extension until June when filing from abroad. You can file for an extension beyond that (until October I believe) if needed.

Is there a way to request this packet of forms?

Thanks!

Thanks all, Married filing seperately, NRA is what I'll do.

IRS must be sending packets to Scotland via mule... because mine is not here yet but I know they came late last year as well. Still PLENTY of time before June.

To answers other people regarding how it comes, I think it comes to the address of your LAST tax return. Which must be fun to the new occupants when you move! It is very handy though, all the forms and booklets necessary to do taxes yourself!

I got the packet of forms this year...I haven't opened it yet, though!  I didn't get one last year and had to request forms be mailed to me...but this year the overseas filer packet showed up on my doorstep about 2 weeks ago.
Now a triple citizen!

Student visa 9/06-->Int'l Grad Scheme 1/08-->FLR(M) 7/08-->ILR 6/10-->British citizenship 12/12
