Potential problems at UK immigration for one-week stay?
« on: March 05, 2009, 01:00:33 AM »
Hi all,

I'm going to the UK for a week in May to visit my UK boyfriend. I have no intention of staying beyond that time, due to work and family commitments here in the US. Any chance there would be a problem, though, when they see a single person visiting a boyfriend/girlfriend (in terms of immigration's fear they'll overstay a visa)?

(Normally I wouldn't think that a US citizen going to the UK (or vice-versa) for a one-week vacation would be an issue, but I'm hearing stories here and there of people getting detained at airport immigration, so I thought I'd ask)

Anyone had any problems with this kind of scenario?  I'll have my return air ticket with me, of course, but anything else I should bring to prove I'm just there for a brief vacation? Should I not mention I'm visiting anyone while I'm there?

Thanks

When they ask you the purpose of your visit be very frank and honest. Say that you're visiting your boyfriend for a week. Don't just say visiting a friend. Bring proof of employment and your return trip to the States.

People get detained because they're not honest. They say 'friend' and when it comes out as boyfriend then that's when the problem starts. Since they figure if you lie about one thing what else are you lying about...

Be honest and don't risk being bounced or being banned from the country.

This is an incredibly stupid question, I'm sure!! I apologize in advance ;) I'm leaving on Friday for a week visit to London. If I have an e-ticket, is the print out of the flight confirmation/e-ticket #,etc, which shows the return flight, sufficient proof? Last time I traveled I had a work visa, so I've never been in the 'just visiting' situation and I'm driving myself crazy ;)

Thanks!

It's proof of your return flight, yes.
