Embarrassing woman problem - where to go in UK?
« on: March 23, 2009, 09:05:11 AM »
I have severe itching "down there".  It doesn't respond to thrush treatments (OTC or herbal remedies).  It's been off-on again for 6 months. I think that's enough info without being TMI.

In the US - I'd go to my nurse practioner, who I have a great raport with.  However, I don't really feel comfortable going to a GP about this.

Are there the equivlenets to Planned Parenthood here?  I've found clinics online, but they all seem to be for under 25's (which I'm not).

Suggestions would be most helpful - feel free to PM if you'd prefer.

Sexual health clinics are one thing that the UK do very well.

Try this link http://www.condomessentialwear.co.uk/get-help or Google 'GUM clinic' and the name of your town.

Most will do different 'sessions' - under 25, all women, gay men etc.  You may have a bit of a wait for an appointment but in my experience (of bi-annual check-ups) they are professional, non-judgemental, and of course free.

Thanks Vicky
When I do a search for my postcode - I get lots of pharmacies/chemists.  I assume I want a "Clinic" at a hospital?

You want a clinic.  They are not always in hospitals though.

Thanks again - I found one nearby and called - unfortunatly they can only make appointments 48 hours out, so I'll have to call for next week.

Often called the GUM Clinic (Genito-Urinary Medicine)

Just FYI in the meanwhile: think "yeast infection" and get yourself some over-the-counter Monistat 7 (or 3-day or 1 day if you're in a hurry. The packet also comes with soothing topical cream for the ichiness.)  ;)

She's just said she tried those and they didn't work.
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

What about Diflucan? I know it's OTC, but you have to ask a pharmacist for it.

Modified to add:
I know the OP stated she tried some OTC meds, but with Diflucan being prescription only in the US, I thought maybe there was a chance anon didn't think to ask for it.

Monistat is miconozole (antifungal) and the UK version (Daktarin) is not available over the counter in the UK for that particular area of the body (as far as I know - at least the Daktarin cream behind our counter in Boots is only for sweat rash, ringworm, nappy rash etc. and not for thrush).

You could try Canesten 2% Clotrimazole (external cream) or a Canesten Pessary, Canesten Once (cream in a pre-filled applicator), or Oral Tablet (Diflucan/Canesten Oral Tablet/Boots own tablet), but if you have already tried any of these and they are not working, you will need to go to the doctor/GUM clinic.

In order to sell Canesten over the counter, healthcare advisors have to make sure that you haven't suffered with it more than once over the past 6 months before it can be sold to you, so if it is an on-off problem and you have suffered with it twice or more in the last 6 months, you really need to go straight to the clinic/GP to check if it is being caused by an underlying condition.

Phone your surgery and ask if you can make an appointment with a practice nurse - that's the same thing as a nurse practitioner.
