how to ship my violin?
« on: March 13, 2009, 01:40:18 PM »
I was wondering if anyone here has moved a musical instrument or anything really fragile, and what company did you use?

Does anyone have any tips on how to ship really fragile things (like a violin) with full insurance coverage? Do only some companies offer coverage?

I've looked at some international moving companies but I don't know if there is some alternative way to do it, since all I want to send is my violin.

I already had some boxes sent to me through the post office, but definitely need something safer for my violin.

(I'm already in the UK and just need to get my violin sent to me, since I forget to take it with me on the plane when I moved! Granted, I had my hands full with my pets that day, so I was a little distracted!) I don't plan to fly home to the US for a visit for probably another year, so taking it with me on another plane ride isn't really looking like an option at this point.

Thanks for any advice or tips!

 :)

Can you have someone ship it FedEx or UPS? As far as insurance & cost you would need to speak directly with the companies themselves.

Bummer that you didn't take it with you on the plane, because that would have been the best option.  I've flown with my fiddle and they let me take it along with my carry on bag.

Hmmm...I'd see if you can find a company that specifically ships musical instruments or UPS or something.  Be prepared to spend quite a bit to keep it well protected.

I have 2 violins (both very ancient and fragile) and I brought them with me on the plane though I was scared that the dry air would crack it.
If you do choose to ship them via fed ex and such you need to make sure you pack enough humidifier tube or material for your violin.
My friend who shipped it that way failed to recognize it and the shippers don't really know anything abut it so his violin came back cracked.
I also highly suggest, if you are abled to, to depeg (this might not be possible), destring and debridge your violin.
I think a good hardy rectangular case with another set of peanut packing outside the case should make sure it gets there okay.
make sure it's not too dry or too wet.

If you have the money, I suggest you courrier it or have someone bring it with them when they come and visit you.  That way it's 100% safe.

Good luck!
