Self-solemnized marriages?
« on: March 10, 2009, 05:57:19 PM »
My fiance and I are getting married in Colorado, which offers something called a self-solemnized marriage. Basically, you just show up to the county clerk's office and fill out the marriage license application and then you can sign the marriage certificate on the same day and that's it, you're married. It's valid in Colorado and due to full faith and credit, valid in every other state regardless of whether they offer this sort of marriage as an option or not. We preferred this because it's less fuss and quicker and cheaper. It's only going to cost us $10. We'd rather spend the money on our honeymoon and the visa application is going to burn a hole in our pocket as it is. Could this sort of marriage affect my settlement application? I kind of get the impression it should be fine so long as the marriage is legal and valid where it took place. This is probably very uncommon, though, so I wanted to make sure.

As garry says, as long as you have a legal marriage certificate to proffer with your application.

...but did anyone else accidentally read "self-sodomized marriages" or was it just me...  Sorry, couldn't help but post that...

Not to put too fine a point on it, but that's basically all getting married is anyway (pre-nuptial agreements aside). The ceremonial stuff is just the superflous (as far as legality goes) stuff that comes in the middle (after the marriage licence application; but usually before the wedding ceremony) and is done for personal, religious and/or familial reasons. Having said, that, yes, I had the biggest blow out wedding you've ever seen. You'll be fine.

And Kitsonk...shame on you!  :P

I just had to mention that I am getting married (and live) in Colorado too and am so glad that we have this rule in place. We have decided to solemnize our own marriage, also. I've always hated that someone ELSE has to declare you married, and even worse that there are minimums to what MUST be included in a wedding ceremony in many states. If two people are making this committment to eachother, it should be us who make it legally binding, not a judge, priest, or anyone else.  Not to mention, as you said, it makes the process so simple. Hooray for Colorado (as I believe its one of very few states that allow this).

What part of Colorado are you in?

I'm actually a Californian. My fiance and I are going to Colorado specifically because they offer self-solemnization as an option. We're going to do it in Denver in a couple of weeks. I think it's awesome. We can say whatever we feel like to each other without having to include whatever the state thinks we should. Anyway, this is all very reassuring to hear so I'm much more comfortable with our plans now. Thanks, everyone.  :)
