Just how steep is Arthur's Seat?
« on: March 08, 2009, 05:26:57 PM »
Not looking for specific elevation details, but my friend has a bum knee, so we were trying to figure out if she would be able to make it up there. Is it a somewhat gentle incline or a very steep walk which would make her knee look like a football. Thanks!!!

Well I didn't do it (not all the way) when we were in Edinburgh, but sent DH on up to the top by himself.  I think there must be more than one way up, but the main path from the direction we were going looked kinda steepish, and had what looked like a lot of narrow steps...I don't like steps or heights with a steep dropoff to the side, plus there were so many people coming & going - I didn't want to get stuck in a panic attack on the steps somewhere, and then have a crowd of people waiting on me to continue.  :-[

I walked up part-way (before the going got rougher so to speak), and then found a place to sit while he went on up the rest of the way.

Maybe someone who lives in Edinburgh or has been up all the way will have better advice, but it didn't look like a path for me, in any case.

I went up last year and it wasn't too bad going up the side I went it.  The last bit was a bit rough but you could probably get nearly to the top.  I saw a very pregnant lady walking up it as well, to be honest she walked right past me, I had to take breaks just from the lung side of things but she managed it just fine.

I climbed it a few times when I lived in Edinburgh, but I am a wuss and had to stop to catch my breath a few times getting nearer the top.  If you're going up from near Holyrood House, the first part is fairly easy going.  You'll get to the top of some cliffs called the Salisbury Craigs and there are good views from there.  It does get steeper towards the summit.  I would see how she feels when she gets to the cliffs.  Are you going to be doing much walking around the city?

We have already returned, and decided to forgo the hike up there. Maybe DH and I will do it next time we go, since it's only an hour away on the train, I am sure we will go back soon. My friend was pretty worn out by the end of the week with all the hills and stairs, even all of the ladies rooms in the pubs were upstairs! She didn't want to climb anywhere except into bed by the end of those few days!  :P
