Laptop adaptor
« on: March 23, 2009, 12:56:56 PM »
A friend has asked if anyone has a spare 19v laptop adaptor.  I have a 16v one, and although I assume that it can't be used, can anyone confirm?

Thanks,

Vicky

Hi Vicky,
It's not quite as simple as having a 19V power supply unit for a laptop I'm afraid. The Milli Amp or Amp rating, the polarity of the connector socket, the shape of the connector socket are all considerations.

Best bet would see if you're friend can pickup a universal power supply that has multiple interchangeable connectors for different laptops, and it's power supply meets the specifications for the laptop in question. These can be had for around £25-40 (ish). Also check Ebay for any power supply units being sold off, hopefully if it's a more mainstream laptop, the replacement units won't be too expensive. If it's a more powerful laptop then expect to pay more.

If he had £25 going spare this conversation wouldn't be happening!

Yep, we really need to know more than just "19V" - Current rating required, A.C. or D.C., connector type and (if D.C.) polarity, etc.

Ok.  He's an out of work resting actor, I suspect that more detail is unlikely to be met with anything other than blank stares and a wish that he'd never asked :)

But thanks!

Do you think he could handle questions like what brand laptop he owns and about what year he purchased it? :) That might be helpful in narrowing down what he needs.

Yep, that he could probably manage.  I'll get back to you.

Aren't you supposed to be asleep? You said so on another thread, and you know if it's on the Visas & Citizenship forum it must be true! ;)

Hi Vicky,

Another reason for the universal power supply is that 'IF' the current machine gives up ghost, then it's increased chances it'll work with maybe a second hand laptop he gets a old of/buys

Sometimes spending a reasonable amount within a long term plan when finances/budgeting are major considerations can be prudent!

I 'think' I have an older Compaq laptop PSU knocking around somewhere - next mission is of course to see if I can find the bast thing !!!

My mother gives me that same look whenever I start talking about ways of contacting me that do not involve traditional telephones (email, Skype, webcam, whatever).  I believe it was Jay Leno that called it the "eye of the chicken look."

Just had a quick look through my junk box.  The only thing close at the moment is an old HP power supply which is 10-0-10 (i.e. 20V) A.C., rated 40VA (2 amps).   The connector would need changing, even if A.C. is needed.

Vicky is there a Freecycle group in London?  You may want to check on there if anyone's got one going spare.  ;)  You'd be surprised at some of things you can get from Freecycle.  ;D
