Does anyone know if this DSA pack can be picked up somewhere rather than ordered?  Perhaps my fiance could pick it up and bring it to me when he comes to visit to save on the international shipping.

Thanks.

There's no law about needing a provisional license in order to take professional lessons.  It might be a requirement for a particular instructor's insurance cover that his students hold a U.K. license of some sort, although I believe most just have policies which cover any driver (so long as that driver holds some valid license which is recognized here, British or otherwise).

Ah, ok. I stand corrected!

I know WH Smith sells them, so other bookshops probably do as well. Keep in mind, though, that not all Smiths will have them - my small branch didn't, and I had to order mine online.

(Just checked - Waterstones sells it too)

Thanks Chary, I'll ask him to keep an eye out for it.

Keep in mind that the DVDs are not region 1:

If you don't have a program on your computer (or whatever) that will play region 2 DVDs, you may be in trouble.  That's why I ended up going old school--I bought the book The Official DSA Guide to Driving:  the essential skills.

I'll be sure to ask any potential instructors about the whole US license thing.  Thank you for pointing out the potential trouble!

The VLC Media Player http://www.videolan.org/vlc/ lets you play dvds from other regions..
