Birth certificate translation- necessary?
« on: April 09, 2009, 10:08:06 AM »
I had my mum send me my birth certificates just in case the boy decides to pop the question and we can elope quickly ;) I was born in Brasil and registered as a US citizen born abroad, so I have a full Brasilian birth certificate in Portuguese which has my parents' and grandparents' names on it, and my US certification of birth abroad, which has only my name but not the others. With the CoA now free, it is probably worth just getting hitched in Scotland when the time comes, so I'm now wondering if it will be sufficient to just present my two birth certificates which together have all the necessary info, or whether I will need to get my Brasilian BC officially translated. If the latter, where could that be done?

I think it would be best to get the full birth certificate, including your parent's names, translated from Portuguese into English, and indeed for that translation to be certified by the company doing that translation.

I say this not just because of a possible CoA application, but in due course the application for the spouse visa (which you will appreciate cannot be made inside the UK) .... but also because of various matters that might arise in the future .... applying for NI number .... taking out life insurance .... etc etc.

Uh, why couldn't I make the spouse visa switch within the UK? Also, I have had a NI number for over 5 years and didn't need my birth certificate for that.

Whoops! Sorry about that. My mind thought you were in the UK on a visitor visa. Yes of course you can apply for your spouse visa in the UK.

Nice catch John! To OP you'll apply under the FLR(M) for your spousal visa in country.

Yeah, I was pretty clear on that part, that's why I was confused about why John thought I couldn't! Thanks for the translation info.
