Clothes from the states
« on: March 29, 2009, 12:23:12 AM »
Hubby wants some clothes from the U.S - mainly jeans as he says that he does not like the ones here as they feel different.

Has anyone had new clothes shipped from the states before? if so, how did you do it?

He also does not have a American checking account anymore and when he goes to purchase items, the internet input system does not allow for a card with its registered address in England  :-\\\\

Does he have any family or friends who would be willing to ship to him?

eBay or an online store that accepts PayPal. also try  http://www.overeasy.co.uk/ , which I think even offers a discount for UKY members. At least, I found out about them through a banner ad on this site that mentioned a discount, and I bookmarked it for future reference!

Amazon allows customers to shop at any of their online stores (ie US Amazon, UK Amazon, French Amazon) using their local payment information.  When I was living in the US, I was able to buy things from UK Amazon and have them shipped to me with no problem.  The shipping was actually cheaper than US domestic!  I would assume that works for people in the UK who want to buy things from US Amazon.

I have ordered from UK Amazon when I was in the US and US Amazon when I was in the UK, but you do have to be a bit careful with shipping costs and customs duty - sometimes the shipping and customs can come to more than your shopping is worth!

Also, US Amazon will only allow certain types of items to be shipped internationally. You'll might be okay with clothes, depending on warranty, but they have restrictions on things like electrical appliances. Just looking it up now, it seems that they will only ship clothing by priority courier mail, which costs $29.99 per shipment, plus $5.99 per item ordered (but just tried putting some men's jeans in my US Amazon shopping cart and it says that they cannot be shipped outside the US  :-\\\\).

Agreed on the customs.  I shouldn't say it, but there are ways around customs: ie if he would buy the items and say have them delivered in your name as a gift (you just need to be sure to select "gift" at the time of purchase on each item)...   ;)

ETA: Are there any particular brands that he's looking for that can be bought here, albeit possibly more expensive?  ie) Wrangler, Levi, Lee?

He likes Levis but says the ones here do not fit the same - he understands the size difference, but swears the cut are different  :-\\\\
