Giving away clothes, toys in the UK?
« on: June 21, 2004, 10:04:15 AM »
I live in England and I just have no clue about this so forgive my ignorant questions!  Where does one donate here?  We did have two charity bags dropped off at our home last month but my toddler put them somewhere and I never found them in time for the scheduled pick up.  I'd love to give away not needed clothes, toys, pillows...but I don't know where to start.

Thanks!

There should be a number of charity shops on your high street - just take them into any of them and I'm sure they'd be more than happy to take them.

We just take bags to the charity shops. There's always a couple on most high streets (Red Cross, Oxfam, Scope). Sometimes I call ahead to make sure they take or are taking things but usually not.
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

If you don't feel comfortable doing that your local supermarket or the tip should also have an 'Oxfam' box to leave stuff in.  Ours also has a box for books and a box for shoes.

After Niall out grew most of his baby equipment, I started looking around for charities where I could donate these items.  None of my local high street charities would take things like baby baths, swings, moses baskets, sterilzers, etc and most of the time, they weren't accepting clothing either.

I dislike leaving clothing in those big metal boxes at the supermarket because they rarely appear emptied and from what I can tell, our local ones leak horribly.

I asked my Health Visitor if she had any disadvantaged families in the area.  Fortunately she did and she took several lots of clothing.  I doubt that all Health Visitors would do that, but it may be worth asking because they will certainly know about families that are struggling.

After an afternoon of ringing round to local charities, I finally found a Catholic charity that works with single mothers in a shelter.  They were more than happy to take the larger items.

As far as toys, have you checked with your local surgery or pre-school?  They are sometimes more than happy to receive toys in good condition.

You could see if you have a charity shop (eg Cancer Research or British Heart Association) taking donations.

Hope this helps.
