Wedding Dress to buy in UK or US?
« on: September 11, 2009, 09:45:08 PM »
I was wondering if anyone could help me out on whether I should buy my wedding dress in the UK, or the US.  I know its probably cheaper in the US, but didnt know if anyone knew of any awesome shops in or around London? What did you do?

I say look in the US while you're here. If you find "the dress," get it. If not, buy one when you arrive in the UK.

I bought my dress in the US because it was so much cheaper! In fact I bought everything for my wedding in the US and left a lot of it with my parents to bring with them when they came over for the wedding because I had so much luggage of my own, what with moving and all.

I bought a Maggie Sottero dress which if I had purchased it in the UK, would have cost me almost twice as much :o It was a bit of a pain to carry-on but well worth it.
I ordered a veil from http://www.veilshop.com/ which I customised and it ended up being significantly less (about $80) than the veils I'd seen here in England, most of which were well over £100. I also ordered a hair piece from them and my jewelry from http://www.1928.com/.

Everything I shopped for for my wedding was significantly cheaper in the US and since I now live in a fairly small town in Northwest England, I also had a much better selection in the US.

Good luck!!

Thanks!  I figured the US would be the better option, but I just didnt want to have to ship it over, but I guess that will be my carry on!   ;D

Haha yeah, as far as getting it to the UK, carrying it on is definitely the way to go!!

Just make sure that you clear it with the airline first or that you've got a garment bag that meets their standards for carry-on luggage in the off chance that you get a snippy flight attendant. Luckily I didn't have any problems, I just told everyone it was a wedding dress and they rushed me through with a smile :) Also ask if they can hang it the first class closet if there is room. Most people are really nice when hear that you're a bride...or maybe it's just because they've watched Bridezillas and are afraid that you could snap at any moment ;D
