Wage slips lost in the post, help!
« on: April 16, 2009, 07:25:23 AM »
Last week my fiance sent me his wage slips and a few other supporting documents for my fiancee visa to the UK. Unfortunately we always seem to have bad luck and they arrived today with stickers from the post office saying the package was improperly sealed and items may have been lost in transit. As it turns out - they all were. All the original wage slips are gone. Luckily we made copies of everything, but will the copies be okay? They aren't notarized/official and I'm panicking.

**Also**
I know other people have mailed copies of things but I'm not sure which copies they worry more about. For example, I know they won't accept unofficial copies of bank statements.

The copies will have to be notarized in some form or fashion, but I'm not sure how you will without the originals. He might be able to go back to his employer and ask for another set of payslips, or if he gets his P60 in the post that should be sufficient as well since it'll show his wages and such for the past year.

Thank you for the ideas! I'll tell him to talk to his employer and see what they can do about another set of wage slips, but the P60 would be good too.

p.s.
Portland pride all the way :)

The P60s should be coming out this month I thought, my fiance mentioned that they normally come out in April, so he might still have a couple of weeks to get it. But his employer might be able to help him out as well, so not all is lost :)

Yeah, Portland's nice, I'll be glad to be out of here though :P

Just a little tip....don't use the post again! Use FedEx, UPS or DHL...the post is notorious for losing things and taking a very long time. When it's something as important as your future a few extra quid is worth it don't you think?

We did though :( I just used "post" as a generic term. I'm not sure what exactly my fiance purchased (signature guarantee and some other protection I believe?) but he paid quite a bit and there shouldn't have been any problems. We took extra steps but it didn't do any good.

If he went through Royal Mail then unfortunately this isn't the first time this has happened. And Royal Mail stops tracking once it leaves the UK. What company did he use?

It is really imnpossible to say whether the copies of payslips are going to be okay or not, as it would depend on what the other documents are.  The same goes for internet copies of bank statements.  There is no hard and fast rule for family based applications.

Now I see why my fiance taped the envelope like he did--he put clear tape on the end he sealed (used a big manila envelope) to make sure it couldn't tear open and have everything fall out :( He used Royal Mail Airsure, and they do stop tracking it as soon as it hits the US--they didn't even make me sign for anything like they told him they would (though I don't think that's feasible since the USPS takes it over in the US, and they're not connected to the Royal Mail  :-\\\\).

The other documents that were lost were only letters from him and his parents (who we'll be staying with initially) and our bank statements. Luckily all that can be replaced. It'll take a little work but we can get more statements from the bank and reprint letters. I was just worried about the wage slips because I didn't know how we could replace them. If his employer can give us another set that would be amazing, I didn't know that was even a possibility until it was suggested.

We will be heeding all other suggestions as well, I think we'll be sealing the next envelope in three layers of tape!!

I think it was RM Airsure, but I haven't had a chance to ask him. There wasn't actually a problem with that, the envelope arrived (and on time) it had just been torn open at some stage and everything must have fallen out somewhere  :-\\\\

If the envelope was ripped open then it certainly is the fault of Royal Mail.
