Weird thumping sound in our 'new' used car
« on: April 18, 2009, 07:12:47 PM »
We just got our used car yesterday. We have a very trusted mechanic who made sure it passed inspection and told us what to look for that might go wrong down the road (it's a '93 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4x4 with 80k miles).

Yesterday we drove it with no problems except it made an odd (to me) sound when we made very tight 3-point turns. Is that normal for 4x4s? I'm just wondering if me being used to little compact cars is the issue and not the car (in this case).

Today, however, we had it loaded up with 3 adults, 2 kids in car seats, and a double stroller. As we accelerated, it made a loud thumping sound which got faster the faster the car went. It seems to be coming from the back but we can't specifically pinpoint where. We freaked out, unloaded the car, did a short test drive and heard no sound at all. With every person or item we added, the noise got louder. So one driver, nothing else in it, no sound but progressively growing the more we put in it.

Any ideas what on earth that could be? Our mechanic doesn't have Saturday hours but we'll obviously be phoning him first thing Monday.

Any thoughts meanwhile would be greatly appreciated!

TIA

When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

Is your muffler ok? If it's loose in the back, it could be hitting the ground as the back of the car sinks with the load. That could explain why it'd get louder with more weight.

And if you threw a party
Invited everyone you knew
You would see the biggest gift would be from me
And the card attached would say
"Thank you for being a friend!"

Two thoughts: axle issue exacerbated by the extra weight; or, tire issue. I once had a thumping noise similar to this, that got faster as acceleration increased, and it turned out that my shocks and struts were okay, axle okay, but one of my tires had internal damage to the belt that wasn't obvious looking at the outer rubber. Got a new tire, bingo, noise was gone. Hoping it's this least expensive issue.
