Visiting Bristol
« on: April 16, 2009, 05:11:35 PM »
Hiya.  I have another request for the gallery.  I'm going down to Bristol next week for a day conference.  A friend of mine from the US lives there as well, so I am going down one day early to explore the area.  I'd like to go see the Roman Baths (4+ years of Latin have made me want to see anything Roman).  So, there's two questions: (1) will the Baths take long enough to exclude other sights and (2) what are the best sights to see.  I'm keeping myself on a budget, so cheap is a bonus.  We will have a vehicle, so we're not tied to public transport (as far as travel time goes).  I've also thought of bringing my GPSr and doing some geocaching in the area, which my friend would gladly do as well, so that's another option, especially because it is free.

The Roman Baths are in Bath, not Bristol, so you'll want to plan on travel time. You can get the x39 from Bristol to Bath, which is about a 45 minute trip, the train from Temple Meads is about 15 minutes, or you can attempt to navigate Bath with your car. I recommend one of the first two options! The baths take as long as you make it. They have an audio tour, so it depends on how many 'stations' you listen to and how much you read. It definitely won't take the whole day and there's plenty of other stuff to do in Bath. There's a free walking tour that starts in front of the baths at, I believe, 10am. If not, it's 2pm. It's a great destination for a day trip. I recommend the Riverside Cafe which is just below the Pultney Bridge for lunch.

I've never geocached in Bath (or anywhere else!) so I can't really comment on that!

Is there anything in particular you want to see in Bristol or are you mostly planning to see the Roman Baths and the sights of Bath? If you want some ideas or tips for Bristol itself,  just let me know and I can help you out - I was born and raised here, :).

I would like to see the "top X things to see" in the region for someone who has only one day and doesn't have any future plans on a return trip (time and money are telling me no).  So, things like the Roman Baths in Bath but not the inside of locker #29 at Temple Meads, even if was once used by Elvis Presley.

if you're only going to be in the region for one day, I'd spend the entire day in Bath, honestly, there's a lot to see.  I loved it :)

There is a road near Chippenham where Gene Vincent had his car crash
