Any specific chips I can use?
« on: February 16, 2009, 06:43:27 PM »
What types of chips can be used in the UK/US?

I was going to get my cat a Home Again chip, but then my vet switched to the Rescue chip. I need to know what kind of chips I can use for my cat so that I don't have to switch it in the UK when I get him there.

Thanks!

I don't know about Rescue. Home Again will get you into the country, but not all vets in the UK can read it.

If you're talking about the Bayer ResQ chip, it is supposed to be readable in the UK/Europe.  It is a 134.2 kHz chip, which is ISO compliant and the standard in Europe; most chips in the US are 125 kHz.  I insisted on getting the ResQ chip for my animals when I decided to move to the UK, but we haven't gotten there yet so I don't have any personal experience in using the chip there.

Here is the Bayer ResQ site:

If your vet does not carry an ISO chip, you can purchase one through this website:
http://www.pettravelstore.com/store-pet-friendly-chips1.html

That is what I did, and I had to pay a small fee to my vet for injecting the chip

My dog, Star, is a rescue dog who was chipped three years before I got her (24petwatch.com). I did the blood work and vaccine in Dec 2008, figuring all would be ok, since she was chipped. Ahh - then I learned they need to be able to READ the chip...and 24petwatch ones (manufactured by Bayer) are NOT ISO.

However, my vet kindly called Bayer and got them to send her a reader, which I'll purchase from them -- at cost, for $210 -- so Star should be ok.

Hopefully, we'll be fine. Interestingly enough, I checked the Univ of KS rabies Web site (http://www.vet.k-state.edu/depts/dmp/service/rabies/) where you can search by chip number to verify status and they have Star's microchip number in the system with her results.

Just wanted to advise that even if the chip isn't ISO, there may be other options, though they'll cost a bit!

Ohhh good find, Anais!  And, of course, I dont have Mirra's chip number with me!  Maybe I can get her results on that website instead of waiting for my slow as molasses vet!

For others with chips that may not be readable, you can normally rent those scanners for cheaper than buying them...

Edit..I got her microchip number, but it doesnt tell me the results!  Just the status as "finalized". Blech.  And someone at my vets office just said they have the results right infront of them, but they cant tell me - it had to be a doctor. Good gracious!  They treat this like super classified information.

I entered my cat's microchip number and it said they had no record of it. My fiance is going to the vet tomorrow. I have a bad feeling that jerk did something wrong! My vet refused to look at any of the PETS documentation or really to even speak to me about the process. He was totally dismissive and I'm so freaking PO'ed that I didn't walk out of there on the first visit and find a decent vet.  :-\\\\

anais97, regarding your 24Petwatch chip. My cat also has one of them and whilst I'm not 100% sure, I am under the impression that it will be read fine at the airports.

According to the 24Petwatch website "in the US, 24PetWatch offers non-ISO (FDX-A) technology similar to that used by other US microchip providers. These chips can be read by the Home Again, Crystal Tag and AVID readers".

Apparently they have the Avid universal readers at Gatwick and Heathrow (so I was told by someone who works at the heathrow animal reception center) and I know my cats chip has been read fine using both the Avid and Homeagain universals here in the US.

Just a heads up, in case you don't need to spend the bucks on a reader!

Audrey when was your blood draw?  Perhaps they haven't even run the test yet.  I know I called the lab about 10 days after my dog's blood draw and they hadn't even reached her sample yet, so her info wouldnt have been on the site if I tried to look it up.   Fingers crossed for you and your cat!!

It was back in February. There was a link on the Kansas lab's site to contact them so I emailed them my cat's microchip # and told them I didn't find it in their database. Within an hour someone wrote me back and told me to check again-they hadn't added it before and they uploaded my cat's information at my request.  :o Thank god they have the microchip #. I was so worried my vet had forgotten since he wouldn't even really speak to me about the process. (I still haven't been able to ascertain if he knows what he's doing or not.) This gives me great relief though.I should hopefully have the official test result in hand today. Please god let it have the sticker!  :)

*My fiance picked the form up today and it has the sticker and I now also have my rabies vaccination certificate. Thank goodness! If only my vet hadn't be so pompous I wouldn't have been so worried from the get-go!

Thank you to everyone who has responded in my aid or otherwise posted helpful info regarding the PETS process.  [smiley=hug.gif]
