Top 5 'must see' places in Europe
« on: June 21, 2004, 04:49:21 PM »
I'd ask for more as we're planning to travel a LOT over the next 3 years but i'd like to see people's list of their favorite places.  Can be islands, historical places, places that essentially won't cost us 10 hours on a plane to get to!

Any details are awesome!  I'm compiling my list.

The Blue Grotto?

It probably doesn't warrant 'must see', but should be on a list of something, somewhere...

This is sort of our list - mind you - we haven't got to all of them yet - nor is it comprehensive!

For the cities:

Paris
Prague
Barcelona
Belfast
Venice

For the countryside:

Scottish highlands
Co. Donegal, Ireland
Cornish coast
Lake District
Tuscany

Landmarks:

Stonehenge
Sainte Chapelle (Paris)
Gaudi's stuff in Barcelona
Canterbury Cathedral
Alhambra (Granada)

Not in Europe but I'd really recommend Egypt and Ghana. Egypt has all the obvious - pyramids, temples and other historial sites as well as the beautiful Nile. Accra in Ghana has beautiful beaches, very laid back atmosphere, very friendly and great markets and cultural scence.  Both are about 5 hour plane ride away.

Other than that I would highly recommend Edinburgh and Stirling in Scotland (lots of history and beautiful scenery) and the little coastal town about 1/2 hour from Edinburgh called North Berwick. There is a boat ride you can go on which takes you to a tiny island inhabited only by various rare bird species. Oh and not forgetting Tantallon Castle just along the shoreline. Beautiful!

Lord that is not an easy task....

Barcelona- to include the mountains and beaches around it.
Brittany -Mont St. Michel and Comburg are brilliant
Germany -The Romantic Route and boat along the Rhine
Florence
Kracow and environs

I suggest places like Budapest... a ferry to Morrocco (Asilah is beautiful) ...the White towns in southern Spain...Paris...Bath...

right now I have my eyes set on the Island of Lundy off the Cornish Coast---population of about 18.

There's a little village on the western coast of Ireland called Moycullen.  It's not too far from Galway and it is literally the most beautiful place I've ever been.  There's one pub, two B&Bs (I stayed at the one owned by Kathleen Barrat-Whelby...dunno about the other one!), a fish shop and about two dozen houses.  Peaceful and just lovely!

Mallaig and the Isle of Skye

The Isle of Skye (an t-Eilean Sgitheanach) is breathtaking in its beauty.  The Isle of Lewis (Leòdhas) is also beautiful but in a different way.  It's exposed to the Atlantic, so much of it is wind-swept, if not a bit barren, but there is still beauty in its barrenness.

Well, I have seen both and they are both great in their own way... Avebury is cool because of it's huge size and the fact you can actually touch the stones, but Stonehenge must be seen once in one's life!  ;D

So many of my favorite places in Europe have been covered, so I'll stick to recomending my favorite places in ol' Blighty;

the lake district, particulaly Kendel. great place to do walking, biking(you can rent bikes everywhere and ride from west to east[east/west] and have your stuff shipped ahead every day to your next hostle) and messing about on boats.

York; a city that has cornered the market on tea shops

Bakewell; Anyone who thinks the English have not mastered fine foods will be pleasently corrected here. Great fine pastry shops, very cool town. (visit nearby Melton Mobrey for out of site pork pies that made that town famous)

Stray Tours; they have a small office out of Earls Court London and do really great tours of britian. very relaxed, you meet great people while traveling low budget; but do it even if you can afford better. We stayed in a castle in Wales on one of their tours.

Hay on Wye; A town devoted to book shops. Too good to be true.

I recommend Amsterdam. It is a gorgeous town. All the houses that have a slight tilt to them and the canals are beautiful. I recommend staying on a houseboat.. Plus I think everybody who has read 'The Diary of Anne Frank' as a child has to see the museum. It's something else.
