Ideas for self-raising flour?
« on: May 03, 2009, 07:50:21 PM »
I got my grocery delivery today, or rather my husband did.  The store substituted wholemeal self-raising flour for the wholemeal bread flour I ordered.  NOT a like-for-like substitution and I'm not best pleased.  But since I didn't catch it and send it back with the delivery man, I'm stuck with it.  But I never use self-raising flour and haven't the foggiest idea what to do with it.  Does anyone have any good recipes for self-raising flour that would be none the worse for being wholemeal?  Muffins maybe??  Scratching my head here trying to think of something useful for it.
I refuse to answer that question on the grounds that I don't know the answer.

From here:  http://www.mcdougalls.com/basics/flour.htm

Wholemeal self raising flour contains the whole of the wheat grain.

Nothing is removed in the milling process, so it is naturally high in fibre.

It can be used as an everyday alternative to white self raising flour making it ideal for cakes, scones, teabreads and some biscuits.

It is, however unsuitable for breadmaking.

How about pancakes?!  :)

pancakes, muffins, maybe quickbread but not yeast bread.
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

My mother used to make some kind of fruit loaf cake thing with wholemeal self raising.  No I don't have the recipe! What about some savoury muffins? Cheese and herb?
