Where's my *%~#!@ refund?
« on: May 06, 2009, 01:54:24 PM »
Hello!  This year was my first time filing taxes overseas and I'm probably not being as patient as I should be, but seriously...where's my refund?  I filed in February and asked for my refund to be directly deposited into my checking account.  Now it's early May and I still haven't seen it.  I did the IRS' official "Where's My Refund" search, but all I got was "We have received your tax return and it is being processed."  Knowing when it is due to arrive would be SO helpful in SO many ways, but the IRS insists on being vague.

Any ideas on how long it takes to receive a refund as an overseas filer?  Thanks in advance!

I didn't receive my state tax return last year for a very long time. I knew it might take a little while and I thought I'd give them the benefit of the doubt, but I eventually called to find out what was going on. Turns out they never received my forms. I was more than a little annoyed because I paid 30 pounds to have them sent Fedx from England to ensure they'd get there on the day. They said just having someone sign for them doesn't guarantee that they will make it to the processing area. Yeah. I was furious. So, I had to fax the forms to them, paying a further 5 pounds for this and they were processed and I wasn't penalized because they were filed late (I had proof of signature from THEIR office).

There's a helpline that you could call and actually talk to a person, rather than get the message on the website.

Not sure about US citizens filing from overseas, but I am a UK citizen and worked in the US for 7 months last year. I filed my taxes by mail (from the UK) around mid-March and my federal tax refund was deposited into my US account just before Easter. However, I'm still waiting for my state tax refund - the NM state website says that they process mailed-in applications within 8-12 weeks. It's only been about 7 weeks since I sent my forms, so I've got a bit longer to wait for it.

The fact that you overseas and married filing seperately should have zero impact - unless you had wages in the UK and tried to claim the foreign earned income exclusion before you qualified.

I filed mine in early February too, and I just received my rebate the other day via direct debit.  I wasn't due a refund, just the $300 jobby, as I lived and worked in the UK for all of 07 & 08.  Hopefully yours is on the way...
