Good yoga dvd?
« on: June 26, 2009, 01:22:43 PM »
Anyone here have a good yoga instruction dvd they'd recommend?  I've never been one to buy these sort of instructional videos... but I would like to learn some new yoga techniques and I would also like to avoid the peppy "there you go! almost done!" instructions of some blonde in leg warmers.

Preferrably, a yoga dvd that has music instead of someone prattling off encouragement insessantly.

So... any recommendations?  ;D

Navie, do you want one that is more of a workout or more relaxing? I have several and the best are the ones by Gaiam. You can buy them on amazon and they are all multi-region. Depending on what type of yoga you want, I can recommend a specific one. Also, have you ever done any yoga at all?

Relaxation yoga, for sure.  When I went to uni (the first time) I took a yoga class at the uni's fitness centre and really enjoyed it.  And while I can remember alot of positions and how do do the basics, I figured a DVD instructional video would be a good way to kick start back into it.

What about wiifit? I go through stages of thinking I should buy it.
I don't care about the minigames but the weight tracking and yoga looks useful :)

Or one of the many EA knock off wii fits? :) Personal fitness coach etc :)

I dunno if it was the EA version, but there was a game called something along the lines of Your Fitness Coach?  it had a virtual woman with whom you could do aerobic workouts, strength training, or yoga.  But then she'd guilt trip me for not showing up....LOL

I would like wii fit, but it would mean investing in a wii... and since I've been gravitating away from video games as of late (but not WOW lol) I couldn't justify the purchase.

Hmm, I don't think I'd like being berated by a virtual woman either!
I got my wii from work, but yeah, I wouldn't recommend buying one either :S

Wish I had time to play games :( If  I didn't have a 360 on my desk I'd never play anything any more.

Heh heh, I work at WOW mecca but have yet to succumb! :) I think I'd lose my life forever :)

For five years I have loved "Power Yoga For Everyone" by BodyWisdomMedia. Don't be put off by the "power" bit -- the intermediate level is very relaxing and slow yet effective for both physical toning and mental calming. It blisses me out.

The narrator is a woman called Barbara Benagh, who has the most soothing and non-gym-teacher voice in the world. There is nothing nagging or blonde bimbo about her, lol! I love her voice. The exercises themselves are demonstrated by a guy who silently goes through the poses Barbara instructs us in, while gentle background music plays. I absolutely love this DVD and there are many different sets of sessions to do to fit your time needs, long or short.

Highly recommended. :)

It sounds like Kundalini might be something you're interested in?  When I started doing yoga, I loved the balance of exercise with spiritual/relaxation.
When I lived in LA, I didn't realize I was studying with the guru to the stars, Gurmukh, but I can see why; she's amazing.
Her dvds are available on amazon.uk:

I still use them at home now!
Hollywood, CA -> London, UK 2004
London, UK -> Long Beach, CA 2007

Best 3 1/2 years of my life!

I second kudalini yoga. I love it! You must try Maya Fiennes Kundalini Yoga to Detox and Destress, or her Journey through the Chakras box set. Search Amazon and her website, www.mayaspace.com. These are truly beautiful yoga practices, and so beneficial.

If you like a brightly coloured, hippy-dippy style, try Ravi Singh and Ana Brett's kundalini yoga. You can get them from amazon as well.
