Obtaining a NI number
« on: July 24, 2009, 03:12:39 PM »
My spousal visa was approved, and we will be moving to the UK shortly.  Is there a way to obtain a national insurance number prior to our depature?

If not, how long does it take to get this information?

Many job applications require this information, and I am worried that I may be disqualified based on the fact that I do not have this number yet.

Thank you in advance for your help on this matter.

I think you have to wait until you get there.  I think you need proof of address to get it.

DirectGov page on NI numbers: http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/MoneyTaxAndBenefits/Taxes/BeginnersGuideToTax/DG_4015904

You don't have to have one when you apply or when you start work. You're just taxed at an 'emergency tax' rate until you provide your number.

It took about 2 weeks to get my number once I did my interview. You have to wait till you get here as you have to be a resident of Great Britian to receive a number.

I expect you'll find that if you leave the NI number blank on job applications, that it won't affect your chances.  At least, it didn't in my case.  It's not illegal to employ someone who doesn't have one, so employers aren't likely to care one way or the other.
