neighbor's weird parking habits
« on: May 26, 2009, 02:32:37 PM »
I'm mostly just venting here, because there's no harm caused and no need to try and change things. But I just don't get it.

We rent a large single family house that has street parking in front and a garage/driveway in the back. Our next door neighbors have their garage and driveway in the front but they can also park on the street and even have room for a truck in the back (there's an access alley).

For some reason, though, they always park their cars directly (and I mean directly) in front of our house. They park their pickup(s) in the driveway but the cars, for some reason, cannot be parked in front of their house. And when I say directly in front of our house, I mean right in the middle of our area. Not even near the border between the 2 houses (we both have wide houses with yard space on either side).

I just don't understand. I would feel totally weird doing this. There aren't a lot of other houses on our street so it's not a question of lack of space. On many days I look out our window and there is their lone car, parked right by the path that leads to our front door... and there they are walking off up to their house down the street.

We have room to park our cars in back, but it makes me *want* to park in front.  >:D
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

I'd start stationing one car there whenever possible, tbh.

Just a thought:  If they rent, there may be a stipulation in their lease about how many vehicles they can have on the property.  They might be parking in front of yours so it doesn't look like they have as many as they do.

That's a good point. And on the plus side, if their car is parked out there it looks like someone is at your house, even if they're not, and that's good for security.

I don't know if they rent. I don't think so. They've been there well over 10 years. They also have lots of visitors so even if they do have a stipulation for number of cars, they could always say it's a visitor. But I really don't think a lease could regulate that when there is open and free street parking for anyone who wants it. We don't own/rent the street, just the house/yard.

I guess it's good for security... even though we live next to the county court house and have loads of police and other emergency services around all the time! A little extra can't hurt!

But I think I'm with expat on this! ;)

I'd try it out and see how or if they react.
