Which practical test to take?
« on: June 08, 2009, 05:26:53 PM »
I am in the middle of taking driving lessons on a manual and am HATING it.  Ok, hate is a strong word but I am really not liking it.  My husband and I are considering getting a new car in the near future and we are looking at one that will switch between an automatic (for me) and a manual (for him).
Does anyone know if I would still need to take the manual practical exam or would I be ok to take the automatic exam?
Thank you!!

It will depend upon what exactly you mean by the vehicle having a transmission which can be switched between manual & automatic operation.

Do you mean one of those which is basically an automatic transmission but has an option to select all gears manually (i.e. not just the normal low-gear lockout provision of a regular automatic)?   If so, then you would be O.K. to drive it with an automatic-only license.

The key point with regard to licensing is whether the vehicle has a manually operated clutch; if it does, then it's manual, if not then it's classed as automatic.

The Motor Vehicles (Driving Licences) Regulations 1999:
http://www.opsi.gov.uk/si/si1999/19992864.htm

Quote
"vehicle with automatic transmission" means a class of vehicle in which either -

      (a) the driver is not provided with any means whereby he may vary the gear ratio between the engine and the road wheels independently of the accelerator and the brakes, or

      (b) he is provided with such means but they do not include a clutch pedal or lever which he may operate manually

Thank you!!!  The description of the car says it is 'clutchless' so it would be ok to just have the automatic license :)

Thanks again!
