Just booked mine for Septmber 8th, 2009 on a last minute cancellation. I'm worried what the weather will be on the atlantic during this time?? Surely won't be like a carribean cruise i'm afraid! Has anyone done the journey before?
We crossed in early October, and we did run into a huge storm at sea. I don't know if there is much of a window of really nice weather on the Atlantic crossing. The QM2 does have outdoor facilities like a pool and sun deck, but it was only used on our crossing when we were leaving New York.
I did have to pick up some sea sickness wrist bands. Everyone claimed that they were just psychological, but when I'd take them off for showering, I'd get ill all over. The seasickness thing was probably due to the storm (huge waves, one cracked one of the outer windows of the Lion Pub).
If you're fortunate enough to not run into a storm at sea, most days will probably be fine to sit on the deck with a jumper or light jacket and read. The amenities on the QM2 are a lot different from other cruise ships as well. There aren't things like climbing walls or wave pools. There is a couple of indoor pools, but I didn't see anyone in them.
There's a planetarium (definitely worth catching the programmes there) which doubles as a cinema. There's a relatively large library with daily contests and faxed condensed version of newspapers from the UK and US. There's balls, pub quizzes, a casino, a theatre with performances by RADA. They usually have speakers on various topics. They have performers, karaoke night, a game room(hallway) with puzzles and board games, a computer area, Mr. and Mrs. (which we won), cream teas (well with whipped cream instead of clotted), a night club (which we didn't bother with, but it's there if you want to dance)...
Although it sounds like there's not the flash and activities of a traditional cruise, we were never bored, and there seemed to be something to do most times of the day. I absolutely loved the trip, and I hope those of you planning the crossing do as well.
