Must you have a IDP as well as a US license?
« on: June 10, 2009, 07:24:06 PM »
Does anyone know if you must you have a IDP (international driving permit) as well as a US license to be insured? From what I can understand the IDP is just a translation of your license (no test required). Any one have any experience with this? THanks in advance :)

No. I don't think IDP is required anywhere or will work a substitute for a license anywhere.

Some countries mandate an IDP for foreign drivers since it acts as a translation of your national/state license, but it is not valid by itself - It must be accompanied by your normal license.

As far as driving in the U.K. with a U.S. license is concerned, an IDP is neither required nor of any practical value.
