Life insurance and pre-existing conditions
« on: June 15, 2009, 04:09:25 PM »
Last week I had a cold call from a life insurance company wanting to sell me a package for new moms (which I am).  My husband and I had been talking about getting me insured, so I decided to hear her out and answer her questions to get my quote.  Four questions in, however, and the call was finished all because of a minor thyroid problem I have.  I can't speak for anyone else, but this is nowhere near a life threatening condition, and it impacts my life in the most minimal of ways:  I have a blood test once a year, pop three little pills in the morning and then forget about it.  Maybe I should have been, but I was not prepared for this to be an issue for me and now I'm left wondering if this is the industry norm.

Has anyone else had a similar experience?

This isn't too similar to your situation, but just in case it helps... When I was in the U.S. I went to go get genetic testing for a disease. Before the clinic allowed me to test they went over things to consider, and one was that although employers and health insurance companies now legally can't discriminate against genetic predisposition, life insurance companies still can. The clinic wasn't sure about the policy in the UK, but their standard advice was to take out a policy prior to the testing and then cancel it later if I wanted to.  My husband and I took out a life insurance policy prior to the testing, and sure enough one of the questions (even in the UK) was if I had undergone genetic testing for a disease, which we were truthfully able to say no to. Luckily the results were negative so we won't need to worry about it in the future, but life insurance companies are allowed to be incredibly selective, so my advice is to shop around at a few companies and perhaps go through an agent.  There are a lot of comparison sites out there, and that might be the best place to start. One company not working out definitely shouldn't bring you down too much until you look at your other options. Good luck!

Thank you for that, Willow

I'll definitely do some shopping around.

It's quite possible that a call-centre rep cold-calling you may very well be looking for easy wins i.e. they (personally) may not reckon it's worth filling out the form if you have *any* kind of condition because if the underwriters reject they may not get commission... Just a guess, but shopping around is good advice.
