What is a reasonable price for shipping 20 boxes?
« on: March 02, 2009, 06:16:13 PM »
Does anyone have experience with using an international shipping agent for just boxes? We only have about 20 boxes and we got two quotes today, both for around $1200. That seems OUTRAGEOUS to me. I expected to pay maybe $600. They can't be more than 50 cubic feet.

Any ideas?

Who did you get quotes from?
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

I spent about $400 to ship 5 boxes from England to Ireland, so $1200 for 20 boxes from the US to England doesn't sound too bad to me!

I used http://www.schumachercargo.com
I was allowed 100 cubic feet and I don't really remember the price but it seems that it was between $600-$800.  I know it was a lot cheaper than the $1200 you were quoted.  I had to take by boxes to them for shipping, but they delivered them to my flat here in the UK.  I was quite pleased with them.

I recently used UPakWeShip.com to send 100 cubic feet from NJ to France.  Cost was $1000, shipped through England.  That 100 cubic feet was 15 medium boxes and 2 plastic tub/crates, so maybe you are underestimating your cubic footage?   I had to take the stuff to the warehouse at that price, but it was close.  Service was excellent.

I just shipped 100 cubic feet from LA, it cost 1400 including insurance and fees.

Seven months ago I used UPakWeShip, 28 boxes (some of which were regular file folder boxes from Office Depot, some larger, some were cased guitars but counted as a "box" (!)  -- 100 cubic feet, and apparently they didn't care about the weight limit (!) for $1,300 from Austin Texas to just outside of London.

I had to deliver the boxes myself to the Austin warehouse, where they shrinkwrapped my things onto two pallets and trucked them to Houston port for shipment. But the other end was a direct delivery to the place I was at. Took just under two months, shipped July 17 I think, was delivered to the door around September 10.

Only one glass pane of a pretty replaceable picture frame was broken and that was my only packing failure, but everything else was great. Was very happy with the service.

Sorry, forgot all about this post. Duh  ::) Thanks for all the replies!!

We've had quotes from UPakWeShip, and the top 4 companies advertised on movingscam.com. I guess $1200 is about what to expect... that still seems like a lot to me. I wonder how much it is to send boxes via USPS...? :/

Before choosing UPak, I had called around. I called USPS, UPS, DHL, Mailboxes Etc who also ship, and various small local companies who ship boxes. The prices all of them quoted were outrageous -- a small box of about 20lbs in weight was going to cost me something in the neighborhood of over $100 to send from Austin to London. That would have been $2,800 for my 28.

After hearing these figures....UPak was a no-brainer, for me. All the alternatives that I started out optimistically aiming for were waaay more pricey.

Seriously, shipping a significant number of boxes of your worldly goods is not a cheap thing no matter how you slice it. After all the other quotes, $1,300 for an unlimited weight and a huge 100 cubic feet volume looked positively peachy. They really truly were the cheapest option. Importantly, they also take care of ALL the customs and duty and inspection on the receiving end. I didn't have to worry about any of that. Some companies charge twice the amount then also tell you there is more to pay at the other end and you have to hire a separately arrranged customs inspection or some such -- I couldn't be bothered messing with that. UPak took care of it all.

Not cheap - my stuff (24 boxes) cost $1,000 to send... and that was shipping it to a friend's APO address. >__<

That price seems about right. If you're still looking for another quote, give us a call.
