cheap short-term health insurance (US)
« on: June 25, 2009, 01:17:23 AM »
I gave notice at the school where I teach last week, fully expecting that, since I'm giving sixty days notice, my health insurance would last through those sixty days.  Well, no surprise, they are being jerks about it and saying that it will end at the end of June, since I'm not technically working in July and August.  We're not leaving for the UK until early September, and I'd definitely prefer not to go insurance-less for those two months.

I'm still trying to fight this (with no help from my union - ugh), but am also trying to figure out what my other options are.  Cobra is just so darned expensive, so I'm trying to look into other short-term health care options.  Does anyone else here have any experience with any of the plans out there?  Any cheap options (with a reasonable amount of coverage)?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

I had a period of about 2 months when I was insurance-less because I had left the UK (no longer eligible for travel insurance as not longer resident in the UK) and I wasn't a resident of Ireland yet so I couldn't get insurance there which would have covered me when traveling. I called around and couldn't find anything. Most of the options I found online were for non-US residents. I called Aetna with whom I had insurance while I was living in the US and I would have been subject to the 6-month residency rule before being able to get insurance. The short of it was - there was nothing. My mother just about had a heart attack when I broke it to her that I didn't have insurance while I was home.

Since you already have insurance, can you call them to see what your options are? Would it be cheaper to pay them directly for those two months, maybe reducing your plan, than to switch to Cobra?

I got some online, catastrophic care plan that was maybe 75 month.  It didn't cover doctor visits, but did have some sort of prescription thing and covered hospital admissions.

If you are moving to the UK I'd do that, if anything serious pops up that will need long term treatment you will be over here anyway.

Thanks for your responses!  Through some ridiculous machinations involving my work schedule at school, I think I have it worked out where I will be covered under my current plan through the fall.  What a nightmare though!

Bookgrl, just out of curiousity, do you remember the site you got your plan through?  75/month I could handle, so I'm wondering what's out there in case something like this comes up again in the future.

Thanks again.
